Flying - May thru November 2020

Thursday - May 21st

Peter-John Thompson brought his new "DHC-2 Beaver" to our first flying session of the season. We fine tuned the radio install and decided to wait on less wind for the first flight. Be sure to check out the photos of this model during construction in Members Models

New member Nico McIntosh flew his speedy "Sundowner" and Hangar 9 "P-47 Thunderbolt"

Mark Primavera and Steve Daly were also in attendance to lend their support.

Sunday Morning - June 14th

It was a picture perfect day for flying R/C model aircraft. Eleven "privileged souls" got to breathe fresh country air and enjoy their passion of flying!

All who brought planes got "air time" and we all enjoyed each others company.

Another first flight for a "stay at home" model, Steve Daly's beautiful 1/4 scale Sig Morrisey Bravo was airborne for the first time this morning. Check out the Stay-at-home Models page for photos of this model during the finishing stages.

As a special treat, Soo Modeller Terry Mortimore made a flyby in his 1:1 scale homebuilt RV-6A (photo left). Click here for a photo of this aircraft during construction (Displays & Events 2016).

Lets hope the good weather stays with us all summer.

'Till next time, stay safe and healthy.   Yours truly, the "flyin' fool",

Club Night Thursday - June 25th

Nine enthusiasts enjoyed the evening doing what they love best: fly R/C model aircraft! It was hot and sunny with “nary” a breeze and just a pleasure to be there! We flew ‘till the sun disappeared over the horizon, which of course brought out the mosquitoes on a “feeding frenzy”!

Sunday morning - June 28th

It was a gorgeous, calm, sunny morning, as a slew of RC aviators adorned the flight line of the Soo Modellers field patiently waiting their turn to take to the sky! Both the spirits of the fliers and the model fuel consumption were high, as we were doing what we love! By early afternoon the sun and high temperatures sent the majority of us home.

Let's hope the “good weather”continues!

‘Till then, this is the ”flyin' fool” saying: stay safe, stay healthy,

Club Night Thursday - July 16th

On a sunny, calm, and gorgeous July evening, the field was "buzzing" with 13 avid flyers:  fuelling, starting, tweaking, and flying their beloved "masterpieces". We had gassers, gassers with smoke, 2-strokes, 4-strokes and electrics all vying for air-time in the picture perfect sky.

Our two students, Larry and Peter-John, got training flights under the guidance of instructors Craig and Cec. It won't be long before they get their "wings"---Good job guys!

All too soon, the sun dropped below the horizon and the mosquitoes "rose to the occasion" forcing us to call it an evening 'till another day.

This is "the flying fool" saying stay safe, stay healthy, and we'll catch 'ya at the field!

Club Night Thursday - July 23rd

"Simply fantastic!" are the best words to describe the weather this evening. Plenty of clear blue sky with just a wisp of breeze out of the northwest.

Ten pilots and two guests marvelled at the antics of model aviation and the pleasures that go with it. Lots of fuel was burned, and the air was alive with model aircraft 'till the setting sun shut us down.

This is "the flying fool" saying: stay safe, stay healthy, and keep flying!

Club Night Thursday - July 30th

The weather Gods were smiling favourably upon us once again! 'Twas a delectable evening with a gentle NW breeze to set our circuit direction.

Eleven passionate flyers and one guest came to fly their labours of love ---  and fly they did!

The evening wasn't without "incidents" however! Yours truly let his "student" get a little too far off shore and "Murphys Law" took over......
That's right .. dead stick! The plane was too low and too slow, but a perfect landing ensued - albeit a hundred feet from shore! Another pilot, while on a "holding pattern" waiting to see if the "flyin' fool" was actually going to make the runway, got disoriented and ditched his plane in the lake also! Well, now we had a "two-four" and had to call on Craig aka "Aqua Man" and our trusty rescue boat "Jaws" to get the planes back to shore! Thanks Craig...much appreciated!

We didn't want to leave but lack of light was grounding our fleet so we cleaned up, packed up, and headed home.

This is the "flyin'fool" saying...stay safe, stay healthy and we'll catch ya' at the field!

kavalier

Craig Knight's comments regarding the Sig Kavalier:

The Kavalier was built by the late Carlo Calcagnini, nearly 40 years ago. Carlo joined the club around 1980 and remained a member until moving to Ottawa. I had the honour of piloting the model's first flight back in to the day. Sadly, Carlo passed away earlier this year.

Steve Daly's Twin Otter - Saturday - October 3rd

This is Steve Daly’s Hangar Twin Otter. The day came with dramatic clouds that added to the atmosphere in the images. It is powered by two 15cc 4 strokes and has lots of power. One engine was acting up, so the engine cowl’s are off.On the last flight of the day one engine quit on landing approach. Steve got it down without a hitch (last photo).
