Annual Fun Fly: 2016 - 2018

Each year in the springtime, the Soo Modellers host a get together of R/C model airplane enthusiasts from near and far - just for the fun of it!
Here's a sampling of photos and reports of this event for the past three years:

The weather was perfect for the Upper Great Lakes Yearly (UGLY) Fun Fly on Saturday, June 18th, 2016 - sunny and warm with temperatures in the high 20's, and virtually no wind all day!
RC enthusiasts came from near and far to enjoy the fun. Thanks as always to our friends from Sudbury for making the trip.
In Cecil's words, "The end result was worth all the effort put into it!" - what a great day we had!
The flying site never looked better. Over the past few weeks, members have been busy retrieving the dock, installing the fence, cutting the grass, and the myriad of other tasks needed to put the field in tip-top shape. Improvements this year include a larger pit area (more room for tents!) and the new "patch" of short grass and "taxiway" from one of the fence openings - to suit planes with smaller wheels. It was put to good use. At one point, there were three planes lined up on the "taxiway" as a fourth was taking off. A site to behold!
Thanks to Tammy in the Meyers Munchies truck, we enjoyed great sausages, hamburgers, and cold drinks all day.
And a big THANK YOU to event organizers Cecil and Rino - and everyone that pitched in to make this year's event more fun than ever!
'till next time,   Chris

The 2017 Northern Ontario Zone Fun Fly is now history and what a turnout we had!
We had 31 entrants from all over Ontario. Out of town guests included Ron Roy, Andrew Coholic and dad's little helper - his 6 yr. old son - from Timmins, Gary Tremblay and his wife from South Porcupine, Cameron Sanders from North Bay, Lee Prevost and Brendan Grace from Sudbury, Hugh Harrison from Azilda, Jim Bisson (the Muffler Man) from Parry Sound, Frank Klenk (aka Colonel Klink) from Tillsonberg, and Dennis Pratt (aka Fuzz Face) and his wife from Windsor.
The weather was superb, albeit, a "tad" gusty at times. Mishaps were few with only Rick (aka Harley) O’Hara and Steve ”row, row, row your boat” Morin vying for the club's 2017 Aquatic Immersion Award"!
The Zone Trophy went to Lee Prevost for his superbly finished kit-built 42% Carden Extra IMAC aerobat. Well done Lee!
The “grand prize” of a 8 channel Futaba FHSS radio, donated by MAAC,  was won by Pat Leonard of the Soo and the 50/50 draw of $110 was won by, non-other than, “horseshoe up his @$$”  Ron Roy from Timmins. We still “luv-ya” Ron!
We rounded off the day with a few brews, a great meal, and lots of friendly banter at Gino's restaurant, before heading on our separate ways.
I’d like to thank all the Soo Modellers who contributed their time and effort in making this a memorial event. Kudos guys and girl!
‘Till next year, “the flying fool” Cec

June 23rd, 2018

The weather for this year's event was perfect, although participation from other clubs was off this year.
We had four participants from Timmins: Andrew and Joseph Coholic, Ron Roy, and Gary Tremblay and our perennial friend from Wisconsin, Tiny Westburg. This year we did have excellent participation by club members. Again, Meyers Munchies were on hand for lunch.
The flying was perfect with great demonstrations from Andrew with his jet, to the new club demonstration airplane helping several new members get started. One of the highlights was presenting a certificate of appreciation to club member and JD Aero manager Julian Chin for JD Aero's generous support of our club.
All registrants received a goody bag prepared by Rino and the pilot's prizes were nicely distributed among both locals and visitors - notably though our friend Ron Roy went home empty handed for the first time in many years!
Special thanks to Rose Dew for donating items for our prize table from Steve's estate.
Thanks also to Kevin and Zone F MAAC for providing a kit and motor that was raffled off and won by Craig Knight.
'till next year, Craig & Cec
