Annual Float Fly & BBQ - 2014 thru 2018

Float Fly in Soo Michigan - July 23, 2014

The Soo Modellers have a long history of float flying. For many years, there was a "sometimes annual" event  hosted by Jeanne Tubman in Soo Michigan. There are some photos of this event in earlier years in the HISTORY menu. The most recent gathering at this location was:

Float Fly 2014

Our gracious host, Jeanne Tubman, held her "Sometimes Annual" Float Fly in Soo Michigan on Wednesday with an invite to all us “Canuck” Soo flyers to participate. The wind was “wild” that day, and swirling all over the place making it difficult to take off and land, but we weren't going to let a little wind stop us from flying!
Pat Leonard, his brother Ken, Rino Zorzi, and Cec Marshall brought planes from the Canadian Soo, while Dennis Henry, Mike Mansfield, and Son Basil flew for the Michigan side. The only incident of the day marred the superb Taylor Craft of Dennis Henry.
We’d like to thank Jeanne and friends for a delicious BBQ and buffet style supper and a big thanks to Mike Mansfield for the ”pick-up" boat. Thanks gang!

In 2016, we had the first ever Float Fly and BBQ at our flying site on Leigh's Bay, and it was a huge success! Aside from being the first event to be held at the waterfront, this is the first barbecue to be held at the club's flying site in decades!
The weather was less than ideal, but didn't dampen our spirits in any way. Although occasional showers "interrupted" the flying from time-to-time, the winds were light, and the temperature was perfect. A wide variety of planes (and pilots) participated, and we flew, flew, flew... all morning.
Aside from providing shelter when needed, the "food tent" was a busy place! We started the day with hot coffee and donuts. Later, we enjoyed a BBQ luncheon feast including BBQ hamburger’s and Paesano’s sausages (with all the fixin's), beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and potato chips.
BRAVO and MANY THANKS to event organizer Tom Thompson, master chefs JP and Larry, and everyone else that helped to make this event truly special!

The second annual Float Fly and BBQ is now in the history books!
The first flight of the day was by our youngest member, Reid Tull, with his ”Timber” on floats and Terry B. “riding shotgun” on the buddy box in case of trouble. This was Reid's first flight on floats and Terry didn’t have to touch the sticks. Well done Master Tull!
All fliers had multiple flights, as the weather behaved itself ‘till after lunch, when the wind shifted direction and the water got a bit choppy.
Larry Greco, our “chief cook and burger flipper”, fed us sausages, hot dogs, and burgers along with yummy baked beans, various salads, and cold beverages. Thanks for a great meal Larry! We promise to tip better next year!
A special thanks to Tom for organizing the event, gathering all the grub, and setting up the equipment, and to the Soo Modellers for their support. Well done gang!
‘Till next year, see ya at the dock

The Soo Modellers had another successful float fly this year. As with our other float fly’s Mother Nature showed up also with a couple of sprinkles throughout the day as well as some really nice weather.
We had approximately 16 flyers and 20+ club members attending. We did get a few candidate’s for the Spectacular Splash award so last year’s winner has been dethroned and will be replaced at the Christmas dinner.
Everyone who brought an aircraft flew as well as Ian and Matt with their ground support equipment (jeeps/landrovers). We had a new participant flying this year from south of the border. Welcome Ken High, hope to see you next year, and years to come!
JP Gendron did a fantastic job on the BBQ and everyone was stuffed. Thanks JP.
All in all was a great day and hope to see everyone and new flyers next year.
