Weekly Indoor Updates: January - April 2017

January 13th, 2017

A small group this evening (six pilots) - but a good evening to conduct some "experiments". Cec and Peter each have a new EPP Crack "mini" - Cecil's is the Edge 540, and Peter has a Crack Yak-55 - which made its first flights tonight. Both are excellent flyers. A variety of props were used on each aircraft to determine which was the best, and these planes seem to prefer the smaller (6"-7") props.

Meanwhile, Chris dusted off his free-flight rubber powered "Bebe Jodel" which made several flights. Clearly, he needs to work on his launch technique, and could learn from Cec as seen in this video from 2013.

After flying, we converged at the coffee shop and sat round the "fire" to review the evening's activities and grumble about the snow...

sumo rescue

Bonus video!!!

Thanks to Vanessa for this short video, showing the amazing rescue of Peter's mini Crack Yak-55 lodged in the rafters. Eagle eyes will notice the curious onlookers crowding the doorway at the far end... They must have thought we were nuts!

February 24th

Last week, Peter's Crack Yak got stuck in the rafters at the top of a perfectly executed "half-loop" and was rescued by the Sumos. See video (above).

This week, it was Cecil's turn. No one ever noticed that short piece of fishing line hanging from the roof truss, but Cecil found it - and his little Edge 540 was soon hanging like a prize catch! With a little help from some "friends", the mini EPP aerobat was soon dislodged.

hoop

An enthusiastic group again this week, and lots of RC indoor action of all types.

This week, the hula hoop was back, and set out on the gym floor as a challenge to R/C fliers. Chris forgot to remove it when flying his freeflight 13" span peanut scale "Andreasson BA-4B" biplane towards the end of the session, and figured the chance of hitting it was remote.

Click on the photo (left) and check out the video (courtesy Vanessa). To everyone's amazement, it flew THRU the hoop! Keep in mind, this is a freeflight model with no means of control after the moment of release, so it's not likely to repeat this event anytime soon!
