Weekly Indoor Updates - October - December 2013

October 19th

The indoor season is off to a fine start. We had a real blast last Saturday, and it was great to see some new faces.  The Dunlop bros. brought a couple of foamies (one of these is seen in the first photo) in addition to a gaggle of micro fixed wing and heli’s to their first indoor session.... and they’ll be back! A hearty welcome to Ian and Matt!

The Airbugs are back too, of course... and in fine form, but much too fast to take a picture of!

As the wind blew and rain fell outdoors yesterday, the weather was fine inside the gym for another awesome indoor session at the Henry.

November 2nd

Informal Airbug racing has become a regular event – with all five bugs buzzing around the pylons again this week. Tom and I experimented by using a thin sheet of plastic glued underneath with a few small holes fore and aft (same concept as an air hockey table) – but did not get the anticipated performance improvements. George’s 3S bug is now faster than ever with the addition of a gyro. For some strange reason – it works fine with George’s cheap HK OrangeRx but has a mind of it’s own when attached to my pricey Spektrum Rx. Never mind... I have a few tricks up my sleeve for next week!

Ten (!) new Airbug kits are on their way from the UK – and the few that are not yet spoken for will be available to club members for $32 ea. Craig has ordered a whole whack of motors, electronics, etc... some of it was distributed yesterday. If you haven’t seen the Airbugs yet – come out to the gym! We have a BNF ‘loaner’ available.

Micros are as popular as ever – and air traffic was busy at times.

November 16th and 23rd

Two excellent weekly sessions at the gym, with several new models making their debut.

We were unable to snap a photo of Riley’s new Airbug - it should win the award (if there was such a thing) for best decorated Airbug to date! Unfortunately, she (and brother Dustin) had minor technical difficulties with their new bugs – but will be back next time in racing form, we're sure!

My “Bee” also made it’s first flights in the gym this week – well sort of. So far, it appears to have neither stability nor control... and seems underpowered as well. Not a good start, but will be back again next week with some design changes. After several attempts, it did make a full circuit after all, and is certainly eye-catching. Some have suggested that it’s actually a bumblebee – behaving in a scale manner and clearly demonstrating the well known scientific theory that bumblebees can’t fly.
