We thought it would be fun to try something a little different in the gym last Saturday

Many are familiar with the airshow trick of taking off and landing an aircraft from a moving platform mounted on a truck – but... has this been done in model form??? Answer? YES!!! Well, sort of....

With some practice, takeoffs are easy.

Landing is another matter! Maybe we should try slower a/c – such as an Ember II – and some additional ‘restraint’ around the perimeter of the platform (a net at the stern?) – so the a/c doesn’t roll off. It should be noted that wheels are not actually required for takeoff – nor landing either, if you can hit the deck!

Later in the session, we were able to launch multiple Sumos at “speed” – which is great fun !!! - and George was able to land a Sumo back onto the platform, but this is cheating, really – as these types can hover well below stall speed. The real trick will be – to achieve this with a “non-hovering” type aircraft.

We had a superb session yesterday – with all types of models flying.

It was wonderful to see several younger faces in the gym – all showing steadily improving talents, and will soon show us more ‘seasoned’ types how it’s really done!

The words: “Catastrophic failure of the blower impeller” can’t be good news. Especially if this blower supplies heat to the gym at the Henry! This explains the cool indoor flying conditions this past week, and we can only hope the school board will give us an early Christmas gift this year and have the heating system up and running soon...

Several new models made their first flights this week in the cool indoor air, including two very strange birds indeed! George’s new quadcopter is quite amazing – and the first of it’s type to fly in the gym. He has plans to add all kinds of fancy gadgets – including GPS, onboard camera, etc... So, come check it out!

The other oddity this week is from an old Ray Malstrom plan – but converted from rubber power to micro RC. Full scale replica! Wings are Depron, fuselage is balsa, and the onboard electronics and motor were taken from that lousy piece of junk (Litehawk Zoom) that I mistakenly purchased at ‘The Source’ a few weeks ago. It flies MUCH better (surprise, surprise), several guys tried it... and the “Skycar” will be available again next week for anyone willing to try something just a little different!

It was a pleasure to welcome new member and heli pilot: Nathanial Tyson. With George’s help, they seemed to get his chopper flying okay, and we hope to see it again next week.

Our last pic this week is another view of the East end of the flightline, as Craig demonstrates his prowess with the new mini Blue Foamie, while the others look on in amazement. Except Charles of course (with Tx in centre) who is too busy flying the Malstrom Aircar, which was out of view when this pic was taken. That’s young Matt sitting cross legged on the floor, apparently waiting for takeoff clearance with his Ember.

February 2013

Ahhh...   The thrill of victory...   the agony of defeat...

So it was with the Airbug races in the gym this month! Despite being limited to a 2S pack and several variations of handicapped starts, George’s Yellow Peril is the bug to beat! The Red Flash made a fine showing, despite Snoopy’s minor ‘flesh wound’, whereas Team Marshall was clearly off their game and Rocky had the race jitters. If you haven’t seen these ‘bugs’ in action – come on out, and give one a try. They are fast, noisy, and nearly indestructible... and we have BNF ‘demo’ model available!
